Katie's One True Love

By Harriet Lovely

“Love is patient, love
is kind. It does not
envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It
is not rude, it is not
self-seeking, it is
not easily angered, it
keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in
evil but rejoices with
the truth. It always
protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always
perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13:4

K

atie was heartbroken. For eight glorious months she thought she had found her one true love in Jason; then, just last night he had broken it off by her telling her that he was in love with someone else.

When she first met Jason at the local college they seemed to bond instantly. They enjoyed late night study dates, picnicking by the lake and dreaming of a future together. For a time they had been inseparable.

Once summer came and Jason got a job they seemed to begin to drift apart. Katie thought at the time that he was simply tired when he had begged off on regular date nights. Jason had promised to start going to church with her once classes were out for the summer, but each time Katie mentioned it he had some excuse for not going.

Katie had quit going to church when she met Jason, choosing instead to follow his lead and spend time together doing other things. She missed the blessings she received listening to the music and the sermons every Sunday. Even her time alone with the Lord had dwindled to almost nothing these days. As she sat alone in her room, staring out the window at the beautiful mountain-view she had always loved so much, she felt totally alone and abandoned.

She wanted so much to talk things over with the Lord, but felt unworthy to even approach Him in prayer. Why would He be interested in her problems now when she had all but turned her back on Him for Jason? Tears began to fall anew as she realized how far she had strayed from God.

As she wept, verses of scripture began to surface in her mind as the Lord gently spoke to her heart. "I will never leave you nor forsake you." she heard. Slowly she began to realize that God had been there all along, waiting patiently for her to spend time with Him again. Though she had strayed from Him and His will for her life, he had remained steadfast and true.

A new wave of tears began to course down Katie's face; this time tears of repentance and of joy as she reconnected with the real one true love of her life.
