Ultimate Love
By Sylvia Hensel
“He put a new song
in my mouth, a hymn
of praise to our God.”
Psalm 40:3
our breath stirred the soul to life
This gift, so precious in Your sight.
Love extracted from Your heart
Given in whole, not in part.
A Seed planted within me,
Creation, in all its mystery.
A gift too great to measure
Meant to be forever treasured.
Though conceived without love,
I accept this gift from above
For you knew this babe before time
And this babe was created to be mine.
So mine it is to accept
Or mine it is to reject.
In love I choose this day
To give this child of mine away.
You have blessed me to be a mother
But this child will go to another
And though my heart is broken,
In my giving, love has spoken.
I pray, my child, you will come to know
That in my mind I will watch you grow
Safe and secure in the loving care
Of two with whom my love I share.
Being the recipient of two of these sacrifices of love, my husband and I are forever grateful to the mothers of our two adopted children. We have been blessed beyond measure, and indeed, they have been gifts that we have treasured.
To say thank you seems so inadequate, yet we do thank you for your unselfishness. We want you both to know we recognize your agonizing pain, as you each released a portion of your heart and transplanted it into ours. We have been made whole by your gifts of ultimate love.
